Midday Movement Series gives emerging contemporary teachers at every level of experience the space to craft their movement styles and hone their teaching skills while allowing contemporary dance professionals the opportunity to commit to their artistry with affordable, consistent, rigorous classes. Midday Movement offers three different types of classes: ongoing, short series, and one-time workshops. All classes are $5 first time and drop-in fees range from $5 - $12 depending on the teacher’s level of experience and level of involvement with Midday Movement.

Chienhwe Carol Hong | Thu, Feb 8th
Chienhwe is a contemporary ballet based dancer with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance degree from The Ailey School/Fordham University. She performed with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as a student for 3 years in their annual City Center season, performed works by Ronald K. Brown, Paul Taylor, Francesca Harper, was chosen by Alonzo King of Lines Ballet to attend his yearly professional workshop, stumbled into the Top 100 of So You Think You Can Dance, and has travelled across many cities (Boston, New York City and Los Angeles) and across the globe to Hong Kong to teach, choreograph and perform. Most recently in Boston, you may see her on the stage dancing to the original and creative minds of The Pillow Men, in the melting pot extravaganza of Tabula Rasa Multidisciplinary Experiment, and at her very own intimate performance platform party called Soul Sessions. She recently debuted the world premiere of her first one woman show, “Thunder Moon,” a dance tribute honoring and healing the divine feminine. After over twenty years of teaching, Chienhwe has transitioned into guiding private students as a “Spirit Doula,” using her Forrest Yoga Teacher Training Foundation, her dance degree, and studies in martial arts to train students into healing, embodiment, integration and expression of the highest self. Caitlyn Schrader | Thu, Feb 22nd
Caitlyn Schrader is a freelance dancer and educator originally from Upstate New York. Most recently hailing from Melbourne, Australia, where she spent a yearlong independent study learning Countertechnique, and previously Boston, Massachusetts (USA), she received a BA from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and a MS from the University of Rochester. Before relocating to the Boston area, Caitlyn was a member of professional dance company, BIODANCE, in Rochester, New York; she then danced for Boston-based, dance company EgoArt, Inc. She has performed in works by Nathan Andary, William (Bill) Evans, Lane Gifford/LaneCo Arts (NYC), Heidi Henderson, Annie Kloppenberg, Jody Weber, and Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel Performance Group (NYC). In addition to performance, she is also a choreographer and her work has been presented at Green Street Studios, The Dance Complex, Somerville’s ArtBeat Festival and the Atlantic Wharf (all Boston, USA). In 2016, she co-curated and co-produced her first professional concert Dance Shorts: short works, short show, average height dancers, geared towards emerging, female choreographers under 30 in the Boston dance community. Caitlyn has taught extensively within private and public institutions, providing classes in ballet, modern, and creative movement in New York, Massachusetts, and Southern France for dancers and non-dancers alike. About Caitlyn's Class: We will work with contemporary techniques and other supportive methodologies to get our bodies moving, grooving and sweating. Mcebisi Xotyeni was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. He trained with the acclaimed outreach school, Dance for All, and was awarded a full scholarship and opportunities to perform with Cape Town City Ballet and various international festivals. After graduating Mcebisi joined various dance companies such as iKapa Dance Theatre, Unmute Dance Company, Suede Productions, and Sibonelo Dance Project. He has taught for numerous schools and companies along with choreographing for outreach performances in the townships of Cape Town. He has lived in Boston for almost a year and currently co-owns, directs, and teaches for Izizwe Dance Studio in North Andover with his wife Amy Xoyeni. He is a company member with Jean Appolon Expressions and has taught classes for Jean at the Dance Complex. About Mcebisi's Class: "AFRO CONTEMPORARY DANCE: A fusion of indigenous African genres mixed with a personal approach of contemporary movement. Sam Govoni received her early training from the Boston Ballet School and Boston Youth Moves, including summer sessions at North Carolina Dance Theatre, Boston Ballet, and Providence Ballet. Sam graduated from The Boston Conservatory with a B.F.A. in Performing Arts, where she performed works by Jose Limon, Alwin Nikolais, Paul Taylor, Doug Varone, Larry Keigwin, and Peter Dimuro. Her international training includes classes and workshops in Belgium, Austria, The Netherlands, and Macedonia. In the summer of 2014 Samantha also took part in the Reggie Wilson Residency at the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston. As a freelance dancer, Samantha has performed with various New England based companies including but not limited to Kat Nasti Dance, Vimoksha, The Urban Nutcracker, Dance Currents Inc., and dSundanceX. Recently Samantha relocated to Brussels, Belgium and is currently back in Boston to work on a project with Jessie Jeanne & Dancers. About Sam's Class: We will explore limitations both mentally and physically, all while asking you to discover how you move as an individual. Class is where we can allow ourselves to make mistakes, take risks, fall, be silly, and explore, so even though class will be catered toward professionals all levels are welcome to come into the studio and play! |

MARSHA PARRILLA | Thu, Oct 19
Award-winning choreographer Marsha Parrilla is the founding Artistic Director of Danza Orgánica. Born and raised in San Juan- Puerto Rico, she moved to NYC where she pursued a Master's degree in Dance Education from New York University. Parrilla is a Luminary Artist at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. She is a proud recipient of several grants from the New England Foundation for the Arts, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and the Boston Foundation, among others. Most recently, Parrilla was awarded a Creative Development Residency at Jacob's Pillow and has been nominated for a Brother Fellowship Award by the Boston Foundation. Parrilla was recently featured at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Inside/Out Festival, and was invited to perform with the Skeleton Architecture collective at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. Marsha has taught dance in NYC and Boston Public Schools, Boston University, State University of New York in Stony Brook, Roxbury Community College, and Green Street Studios. She is the founder of the Dance Research Online Forum- a site dedicated to free and progressive dance education, and is an active member of the Boston Dance Alliance Board of Directors, and the National Dance Education Association. Marsha's production history includes several evening-length company concerts, as well as the award-winning annual festival: We Create! Celebrating Women in the Arts. About Marsha's Class: This class incorporates elements of Afro Caribbean, Contemporary, Ballet, and Improvisation, such that they fit together harmoniously. Dancers will explore rhythmicality and timing through floor work, center exercises, and partnering work designed to entice the body to think in different ways through movement. The final combination will be based on this exploration, and with some room for improvisation. |

Erin is a Boston-based dance artist and educator. After graduating from Boston University in 2011, she joined Kairos Dance Theater where she worked as a principal dancer for four years. Erin has also performed in projects with Bethan Peters (2016), Kelley Donovan & Dancers (2013-2015) and Paula Josa-Jones/Performance Works (2012). She earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Community Dance from Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London during 2015-2016, and is currently further developing her own choreographic work and freelancing back at home in Boston! She has a breadth of experience teaching contemporary technique, choreography and improvisation to youth of all ages at such locations as Wilmington Dance Academy, LINX Dance Studio, Cambridge Performance Project, Trinity Laban Children's Dance Programme, Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, and Arts at the Armory, and is currently also a lead Teaching Artist for the Boston Ballet's Education & Community Initiatives. About Erin's Class: Class will focus on exploring and manipulating the rhythms, gestures, and tensions that underlie our movement as dancers. A mobilizing warmup will be followed by a contemporary center barre to more clearly find the spine and transfer movement between the quadrants of the body. We will then dive into phrasework that challenges dancers to segment the body within single actions, find subtlety and then build it into expansive sequences. Dancers will then be guided to manipulate the phrase by drawing on Laban's choreologic principles surrounding dynamics, and compose a more layered and individual final product. |

JAMES RANEY | Thu, Nov 9th
James Raney is a New York City based choreographer and performance artist born and raised in Raleigh, NC. He attended the Boston Conservatory for the performing arts earning his BFA in contemporary dance studies with an emphasis in choreography, studying under and performing works by renowned artists such as Sidra Bell, Brian Brooks, Laura Edson, Merce Cunningham, Zoe Scofield, and Doug Varone. From 2010- 2012 James taught in outreach programs sponsored by William G. Enloe High School in conjunction with the Wake County Public School system for children on the autism spectrum. The 2014 recipient of the Pirate artist Grant Award (East Carolina University), James received funds to produce and choreograph a full-evening production at the Toyota Amphitheater in Greenville, NC. James was the 2016 fellowship resident artist for the Elliott school in Boston, MA in 2016 where he set original choreography on a group of seven kids. James is the current intern and artist in residence at the Green-point Gallery in Brooklyn, NY where he will choreograph and perform work in the fall of 2017. James is adamant about facilitating equitable and safe spaces for dance for marginalized communities, ensuring that dance is accessible to all who desire to create and perform regardless of perceived limitations, race, gender and sexual orientation. About James's Class, "Taking Center": Taking Center focuses on ownership and full embodiment of given phrase material while simultaneously incorporating individual artistic choices. This class will be an exploration of dynamics and qualitative modalities as well as a practice in specificity and clarity with an added emphasis on performance and musicality. |

Anara is a Boston native, but has spent almost as much time in Cuba—visiting since she was a child, and receiving much of her dance education there. Her training & certifications include many styles of Latin Dance, Contemporary Dance & Acro/Gymnastics, as well as fusion work in these and other genres. With over 25 years experience, she is the founder of the MetaMovements Artist Collective, and is recognized for her expertise in developing artists—taking them up the ladder of success in their chosen styles and focus areas. She has taught in the U.S., Europe, Asia & the Caribbean, and is known for her ability to help dancers of every level achieve their goals. Her work is continuously inspired by MetaMovements Dance Trips to Cuba, and her on-going collaborations with artists & educators on the island. About Anara's Class, "Cuban Contemporary Movement": Cuban Modern is a codified technique created in the 1960s, which is still used as the primary foundation of all dance training in Cuba today, along with training in it’s three main roots: American Modern (particularly Graham, Cunningham and Sokolow), Classical Ballet, and Traditional Afro-Cuban Dance & Music. Fathered by Ramiro Guerra, it continues to serve as inspiration for new generations of Contemporary and Latin dancers, instructors and choreographers, as they stretch the limits of the human body, and explore the depths of human expression. In this class we will achieve a variety of goals together—explore the similarities and differences between Cuban Modern and it’s American counterparts, delve into the organic beauty and flow of the present Contemporary movement in Cuba, and learn more about the roots of this unique genre that has enthralled audiences from around the world. Tara Lynch is a recent member of the Boston dance community, making her way here a year ago to dance with Pantos Project, perform with the Boston Lyric Opera and most recently join Kat Nasti Dance. In Boston/Cambridge, her choreography has been shown in the Boston Contemporary Dance Festival, NACHMO at Dance Complex, and at the Green Street Seeds Choreographic showcase, a program which she organized and ran. She has a BFA in Dance from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. While in New York she freelanced with several companies and had the opportunity to perform with Kidd Pivot at Lincoln Center's White Lights Festival. Her evening length piece, "Dusk and Melon" has been performed at Judson Memorial Church, Dixon Place and at the Dumbo Dance Festival. Grant Jacoby is a New York City and Boston based choreographer, performer, and teacher. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Connecticut College in 2013, where he received his BA in Dance and Theater and is currently pursuing his MFA in Dance at Sarah Lawrence College. During his graduate and undergraduate studies, he has had the pleasure of working with such distinguished artists such as David Dorfman, John Jasperse, Lisa Race, Jodi Melnick, Heidi Henderson, Kathy Westwater, Peggy Gould, and Adele Myers. He has also studied at Trinity/La MaMa Urban Arts Semester, Bates Dance Festival, MADE in France, and with Movement Workshop Group. I find this is the best way to center oneself by finding connection to the ground. The warm up then continues to spiral upwards to standing, finding fluidity and mobility in the muscles and joints through codified forms and variations. Lastly, I end class with a large, generous phrase exploring detailed nuances we have discussed and experienced earlier in the class, paired with the joy and rigor of release technique." |

About Jessica's class: "Jessica has had the privilege of attending many wonderful classes and workshops in the last two years and aims to create an environment where previously learned ideas can be shared and further expanded. Class will consist of exercises (some choreographic, some improvisational) for the mind, body, and energetic spirit. Sonia is fascinated by the human body and believes energy is boundless. She teaches Hatha and restorative yoga with emphasis on creative/adaptive movement and alignment. Sonia is currently in school pursuing her license in massage therapy. She grew up in New York City attending public schools with emphasis on implementing arts in education - she dipped her toes in many movement forms during her development. After graduating from F.H. Laguardia High School for Music and Art and Performing Arts with a focus in acting she went up to Vermont and received a BA in sociolinguistics with a minor in dance. Since relocating to Cambridge she has had the pleasure of moving regularly with Vimoksha Dans and Ruckus Dance. About Sonia's class: "Self-massage and partner palpation anatomy will move into some improvisational scores and creative movement warm-up. Slow floor and inversion work will be linked with breath followed by some buttery phrasework with opportunity for contact." |

Angie Moon is a NYC based dancer, choreographer, and artist. She is a recent graduate of NYU Tisch School of the Arts masters program, and received her undergraduate degree from Roger Williams University. She started her professional dance career in Boston MA, where she preformed professionally, and in 2011 planted the seed that would become her dance company, Angie Moon Dance Theatre. Her work while artistic director with the company has been described as "Quite beautifully enthralling, like a well-written tragic novel that refuses to be set aside." Through her few years with AMDT she has presented work both Nationally and Internationally in venues ranging from farmers markets to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, to Danspace Project at St. Marks Church. Adriane recently completed her second year guest artist/teacher for the Expansive Meanings and Makings in Art Science Project for the TERC Organization in partnership with the National Science Foundation. Adriane has substitute taught ballet, modern dance, and gyrokinesis at The Dance Complex, Green Street Studios, and Boston University. Adriane and her company Continuum Dance Project, were the recipients of the 2017 winter Choreographers' Residency program at the Boston Center for the Arts. She is Co-Artistic Director and a choreographer for Continuum Dance Project and a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT). About Adriane's class: "Come have fun this summer and work on alignment, improv, and phrase material, while working up a sweat! The class explores advanced phrase work based on Limón, Horton, Cunningham, and release techniques while enjoying the movement of dance.
