HISTORY

PictureFlyer from the inaugural season of Midday Movement, 2015
Midday Movement Series was founded in August 2015, but its story began long before.

MMS founder Marissa Molinar began training as a professional contemporary dancer after graduating from college with a degree in environmental science. To grow her technique, she took between 7-10 classes a week in Boston from 2009-2014. During that time she noted three situations that were hindering training opportunities in Boston:
First, although the city had many excellent established teachers in classical Modern styles, it was nearly impossible for new teachers to establish advanced contemporary classes due to high cost of space rental, low attendance, and underdeveloped class structures, so these new classes were failing before they had a chance to take off.
Second, many established teachers were moving to closed communities (i.e. universities, private schools) with no one to take over their vacant class time slots.
Last, because of high class fees, as well as scheduling conflicts for dancers working in the mornings and evenings, many professional contemporary dancers could only afford to take one or two classes a week, many would instead take day-time fitness classes in lieu of dance classes, and many dance professionals were not taking class at all -- and the quality of professional dance in Boston was suffering.

Marissa was concerned about the dwindling availability of advanced, open modern + contemporary dance classes, dwindling attendance, and the dwindling sustainability of Boston's contemporary dance future in general. In response to all of these problems, Marissa developed an idea for a lunchtime class series offering classes  at subsidized rates with new and emerging teachers. Once friend and fellow dancer Jennifer Roberts suggested the title of “Midday Movement,” the Series was officially born.

Classes with Midday Movement Series began September 2015 and took place every Tue/Wed/Thu at Green Street Studios with inaugural teachers Michael Figueroa, Callie Chapman, and Irene Hsi teaching weekly classes for the full year.

Today, Midday Movement Series provides affordable, consistent classes to advanced and professional contemporary dancers while offering new teachers at every level of experience a place to investigate their artistic focus, hone their teaching skills, and gain a following. So whether you're looking to teach a class,  take a class, or be a part of a vibrant community of artists, you can join us every week and be part of the Movement!
